Chapter Five

After they returned to Mic's house and before they went in, Mic asked him once again, to remove his shoes outside and when they entered his house, they both washed their hands for the safety of the newborn puppies.

They had just finished washing up when Gladys appeared in the hall doorway, wagging her tail in greeting. She wasted no time running over to Jason and wiggled and showered Jason with happy dog kisses.

Mic stared at the spectacle and felt a bit left out, rolling his eyes when Gladys went over on her back for him.

"Fickle bitch, here I get a growl after she delivers her pups and you get kisses; now you can see why it wasn't an option for me to come back here from your place empty handed," Mic told him.

"She's just the sweetest little girl and knows a good man when she sees him, that's what it is Mic. Now I can't wait another minute, Gladys where are your puppies?" Jason asked, and followed Gladys in the hall into Mic's spare bedroom.

Gladys quickly walked over to a large low basket, checking out her babies, and turned around and wagged her tail, inviting Jason over to meet her new family of tiny silky black puppies.

He hastily went over and saw the glossy black puppies, snuggled warmly together and softly breathing almost in unison. Gladys looked at her pups, then back at Jason, and wagged her tail.

"She's inviting you to pick them up Jason, it is a special honor, and it means she trusts you completely with her babies. Like I told you before, she almost acted like I was a stranger," Mic said, softly, his heart filling with great emotion while watch this beautiful unexpected scene unfold.

"I'm sure she doesn't think that about you, she was probably still grumpy from having delivered her pups. Look Mic, I've never picked up a dog this tiny before and I'm kind of afraid to," Jason told him.

Just be gentle and speak in very soft quiet tones, they can't see yet with their eyes shut, but they can smell you and they distinguish who their mother is and where the food comes from," he smiled.

Jason first glanced back up at Mic, and reaching down slowly, he carefully picked up the nearest pup as Gladys watched him closely. He was amazed at how small they were and how soft yet wiry their fur was, and delighted in their perfect tiny feet already sporting long sharp claws.

"Mic these tiny pups are the most perfect beautiful things I've ever seen, they are so wonderful," he smiled, setting down the first one and picking up another, marveling anew at their perfection.

"It is amazing to see them like this I have to agree with you; each one is a flawless little miracle."

While Jason was holding the last pup, the pup started to cry surprising Jason with his loud little voice, and was surprised to see how quickly Gladys moved over to him to check her pup.

Jason hurriedly set the puppy carefully back with his littermates and looked up at Mic in distress.
